Picking up the pieces

‪Our desire: to be a church for everyone who thought they’d never do church & anyone who thought they would never do church again. ‬

For the minimized, marginalized and the misfits. For the hopeless, the half way, the hung over and the hard case. The thinker and the skeptic, the rebel and the refugee. Home for those who desperately want to belong but have felt they don’t fit and those who earnestly want a part to play, to see the world remade, the Kingdom reality of Shalom made known through us.

Not everyone wants in. Not everyone wants everyone in.

I take God at his word, that says the gates are open and all are invited in. I take Jesus as the Word, who demonstrates radical inclusion. I lean on the Holy Spirit, having experienced the radical lengths my God has gone to in order that I be included.

So I will forge that space. I will protect the open gates. I will preach the healing justice that is the gospel, that calls us to pursue justice, equality and reconciliation in the world around us. No matter the cost. I know we preach taking up our cross to follow Jesus, I just never guessed it would cost me Christian friends.

So here we are, picking up pieces. I’d like to say more determined than ever, But I feel more fragile than ever.

I am more sure than ever. Taking the Holy Scripture more seriously than ever, as I open each page I find I am immersed in stories that are alive to me in ways I could never have imagined before walking this road. So I will keep walking.

If you are the prodigal wondering if there will ever be a place for you to call home, I pray you find that place. I pray there are more places where the gates are always open and the lights are always on. I pray we can be that place in our little corner of the world. If that’s also your corner of the world, come say Hi.

  1. Amen to that I’m in and staying in you have opened your arms to me and given me a place to belong. For the first time in my life I feel like I fit somewhere. I hope that I can be a part of helping someone else find that fit.

  2. Tara,
Totally feel like your reading my mind in so many of the things you post! Especially in regards to Church and Jesus it’s a blessing to know there’s people that are on the same page.
    Love reading your stuff!
